Why is Px3 IT carbon footprint approach more accurate than others?

Other computer carbon footprint companies use computer energy consumption benchmark data that excludes electricity consumed when humans use computers. Instead their data focuses only on low power modes such as off, sleep and idle which is counterintuitive as computers are purchased to be used. Considering that computers experience the highest level of electricity consumption when subject to human-computer interaction, excluding what is known as the 'active state' from electricity consumption and associated GHG emissions causes considerable errors. Px3 is the only company that has developed a methodology that enables the inclusion of the active state. The method and applications Px3 uses were developed during PhD research with the University of Warwick computer science faculty by Dr. Sutton-Parker, a leading scientist in the field of sustainable IT. As such, unlike competitive offerings, our results are founded in science, tested rigorously in the field and peer reviewed by leading academics and scientists.

Can I calculate computer GHG emissions for free?

Yes. While we offer chargeable sustainable IT services, we also offer a free of charge online application to get you started. Simply go to https://itcf.px3.org.uk and register. Once your account has been activated you will be able to use the application to generate an average electricity consumption (kWh/y) value, a carbon footprint (kgCO2e) value and an offset value (trees) for all of your end user computing devices (such as notebooks, desktops, monitors etc.) based on how many years you intend to keep the devices and where in the world you will use them.

Do you have an application to compare computers by carbon footprint to help our procurement strategy?

Yes. It's called the Dynamic Carbon Footprint application. It enables you to rank computers by carbon footprint and make the right choice based on sustainability as a criterion. The application is unique as it enables you to select how long you may keep devices for and where they will be used. This is important as manufacturer reports don't allow this. Instead they determine retention and location periods, such as 3-years and 'the USA', while you may keep devices for 5-years and be based in Europe where electricity is less carbon intensive. As such, the application assures that your decisions are based on data relevant to you and your organisation.
